The Rookie and I picking apples at 33 weeks |
This past weekend Ian and I took advantage of a short break in the rain to visit our favorite orchard. We were a little late in the season (they seemed to ready early this year) so we had to hunt around a bit but, we still managed to pick a good 12 pounds of apples and take home some freshly pressed cider.
Just some of the apples we took home |
In the past we have canned apple sauce and apple butter but this year we decided to try a low-sugar apple pie filling. It seemed a bit more versatile than sauce or butter, we can use it in all sorts of desserts and baked goods and also as a topping for pancakes or oatmeal. Pie filling is also much easier and faster to make. No pureeing or mashing, no stirring a bubbling vat for hours. It turned out great and we ended up with 11 jars.

Thanks for the comments! I ended up using the last of the apples to make 3 and 1/2 jars of apple butter. I cooked it up in the crock pot and it turned out great!
